The Indigenous General Merit Scholarships for Undergraduate Students Commencing Term 1, 2025 aims to encourage and assist Indigenous Australian students to undertake study at UNSW.

While Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity is unique and sacred to every person, UNSW scholarships for Indigenous students will require proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and heritage. If you have not already provided proof of identity and heritage to Nura Gili, any Indigenous specific scholarship offer made by UNSW Scholarships will be conditional upon receipt of proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage to Nura Gili as outlined on the Nura Gili website. Undergraduate Commencing Scholarships - Application Required


You must submit an application to be considered for the following scholarships. More scholarships may be added to this list progressively.


Scholarship Value and Duration Eligibility
Mr & Mrs Ngiam Tong Yuen Residential Scholarship for Indigenous Students (PUCE1023)

$25,000 per annum towards residential fees for the minimum duration of program

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any undergraduate program at UNSW. Preference will be given to students residing at Basser College
Faculty of Engineering Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1028)

$15,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program (up to 5 years)

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any undergraduate program in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW.
School of Mathematics and Statistics Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1268)

$5,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate studies in a Bachelor of Science majoring in Mathematics or Statistics. Double degrees are permitted.
Note: Current undergraduate students enrolled in their 1st year of study at UNSW and majoring in Mathematics or Statistics will also be considered.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of:
  • Academic Merit
  • Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
  • Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies in the areas of specialisation

You must provide evidence supporting the above criteria in your online application. Please refer to the Scholarship Application Supporting Documents for a detailed list of examples.

Unanswered application questions or claims without supporting documentation will not be assessed. Late applications/supporting documentation will not be accepted. Activities and achievements recorded more than 3 year ago will not be considered in your application assessment.



Other Indigenous Undergraduate Merit Scholarships

The following scholarship will be automatically awarded. Please refer to the information below regarding the eligibilty and selection criteria.

Scholarship Value and Duration Eligibility & Selection
Faculty of Engineering Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1028)

$15,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program (up to 5 years)

Eligibility:
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Must have completed the UNSW Indigenous Pre-Program; and
  • Received a full offer to any undergraduate program in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW. Enrolment in a double degree in combination with one of the above degrees is also permissible, but the tenure of the Scholarship will remain at a maximum of 5 years.
Selection:

  • Applicants will be assessed on academic merit.
UNSW Indigenous Undergraduate Business Scholarship (UGCE1328)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program.

Eligibility:
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Must have completed the UNSW Indigenous Pre-Program in Business, prior to commencing study at UNSW; and
  • Received a full offer to an undergraduate degree program offered by UNSW Business School.
Selection:

  • Scholarships will be automatically awarded to students who have successfully completed the UNSW Indigenous Pre-Program in Business and are commencing an undergraduate degree offered by UNSW Business School.

UNSW reserves the right not to award a scholarship, where there is no applicant of sufficient merit, or if the applicant does not meet the scholarship eligibility and/or selection criteria.
